Mean Value Conjectures for Rational Maps
نویسنده
چکیده
Let p be a polynomial in one complex variable. Smale’s mean value conjecture estimates |p′(z)| in terms of the gradient of a chord from (z, p(z)) to some stationary point on the graph of p. The conjecture does not immediately generalise to rational maps since its formulation is invariant under the group of affine maps, not the full Möbius group. Here we give two possible generalisations to rational maps, both of which are Möbius invariant. In both cases we prove a version with a weaker constant, in parallel to the situation for Smale’s mean value conjecture. Finally, we discuss some candidate extremal rational maps, namely rational maps all of whose critical points are fixed points.

Frontiers in complex dynamics
Rational maps on the Riemann sphere occupy a distinguished niche in the general theory of smooth dynamical systems. First, rational maps are complexanalytic, so a broad spectrum of techniques can contribute to their study (quasiconformal mappings, potential theory, algebraic geometry, etc.) The rational maps of a given degree form a finite dimensional manifold, so exploration of this parameter ...
متن کاملSymmetric Monopoles
We discuss the spectral curves and rational maps associated with SU(2) Bogomolny monopoles of arbitrary charge k. We describe the effect on the rational maps of inverting monopoles in the plane with respect to which the rational maps are defined, and discuss the monopoles invariant under such inversion. We define the strongly centred monopoles, and show they form a geodesic submanifold of the k...
متن کاملPure L-Functions from Algebraic Geometry over Finite Fields
This survey gives a concrete and intuitively self-contained introduction to the theory of pure L-functions arising from a family of algebraic varieties defined over a finite field of characteristic p. The standard fundamental questions in any theory of L-functions include the meromorphic continuation, functional equation, Riemann hypothesis (RH for short), order of zeros at special points and t...
متن کاملAlgebraic K-theory of group rings and the cyclotomic trace map
We prove that the Farrell-Jones assembly map for connective algebraic K-theory is rationally injective, under mild homological finiteness conditions on the group and assuming that a weak version of the Leopoldt-Schneider conjecture holds for cyclotomic fields. This generalizes a result of Bökstedt, Hsiang, and Madsen, and leads to a concrete description of a large direct summand of Kn(Z[G])⊗Z Q...
متن کاملVojta’s Conjecture Implies the Batyrev-manin Conjecture for K3 Surfaces
Vojta’s Conjectures are well known to imply a wide range of results, known and unknown, in arithmetic geometry. In this paper, we add to the list by proving that they imply that rational points tend to repel each other on algebraic varieties with nonnegative Kodaira dimension. We use this to deduce, from Vojta’s Conjectures, conjectures of Batyrev-Manin and Manin on the distribution of rational...
